Who's That Girl
Promotional Items
For the full narrative relating to 'Who's That Girl' please refer to the entry under the ALBUMS tab
The US press pack for 'Who's That Girl' consists of two promotional photos, a two-page biography and a photocopy of a feature from the 'Los Angeles Times' housed in a yellow Sire folder.
The two photos that came with this pack are unusual in that neither contains the usual 'Sire' logo. They are also inconsistent - the first being a promotional shot of Madonna with Coati Mundi from the film 'Who's That Girl', while the second is an iconic Herb Ritts shot from the 'True Blue' session, this image being used to promote the 'Who's That Girl World Tour'. The collector should also note that while the movie photo is the same image as issued with the US press pack for movie, each photo has different credits. The version shown here contains information for both the movie and the soundtrack album, while the promo photo with the movie press pack only relates to the movie.
For the first time there is also a good selection of UK promotional items. This is due to the fact that the release also tied in with Madonna's first world-wide tour which shared the same name, not to mention the movie. Consequently there is a plethora of items promoting not just the soundtrack but also the movie, the tour and Madonna's back catalogue. The lines were blurred with the discovery of a UK invitation set for the cinema release which includes not just items relating to the movie but also a sealed copy of the soundtrack cassette, complete with a promotional rectangular sticker on the rear. This is interesting as cassettes were not normally issued as promotional items - indeed this is the only example - and the rear stickers are normally only seen on album sleeves. To avoid confusion, the cassette has also been included in the Promo page for the soundtrack, however it is that same cassette that forms part of this set.
The set is very rare, having only been seen once on Ebay, but the rarest promotional item is probably the black label test pressing for the LP. Such UK test pressings are not normally produced and indeed this one was manufactured in Germany but contains the UK catalogue number. This does not normally occur - test pressings normally only contain the European catalogue number which is seen on the 'Like A Virgin' white label and white vinyl.
Paper-based promotional items started out promoting the soundtrack (see cardboard banner) but were swiftly followed by more inclusive promotional items publicising both the tour and the back catalogue. There are two different promotional posters, the first to promote the compilation soundtrack album, and the second which is much larger (40"x60") promoted the tour as well as the soundtrack album plus the back catalogue. This was to be a theme as a further promotional item is a rare standee which is similar as well as the first promotional cube, which again features full size album sleeves for all Madonna releases to date.
There is also an additional promotional item related to the 'Who's That Girl' tour - a large 'souvenir poster' - which was issued with the album 'True Blue' (see True Blue - reissue). It seemed at the time incongruous to have such a poster issued with an older album, rather than the new album that shares its name. However 'Who's That Girl', a various artists soundtrack album, was never going to be one of Madonna's strongest, whereas 'True Blue' by now a phenomenal seller, had become the best selling album by a solo female artist. It was therefore understandable that a souvenir of Madonna's first triumphant UK appearances during her debut world tour would be issued with an album that was already being regarded as a classic.
