Was (Not Was) - Born To Laugh At Tornadoes
The first entry in this section sadly does not actually feature Madonna's vocals. However, Madonna did originally record the lead vocal on the track ‘Shake Your Head (Let's Go To Bed)’ with Don and David for the Was (Not Was) album ‘Born to Laugh at Tornadoes’ produced in Detroit in 1982–83. Eventually, the released vocal was by Ozzy Osbourne (of all people) with backing vocals by Kathy Kosins and Carol Hall. Madonna and John "Jellybean" Benitez are both listed in the album credits which is why this album is featured here.
During a May 2006 Kathy Kosins phone interview with Bruce Baron it was revealed that Kathy's vocals were intended to be replaced by Madonna’s but Madonna's label Sire Records did not agree to the release. Kathy's vocals were restored for the ZE Records release as a backing track.
Madonna originally became involved via her friendship with Stephen Bray and his group The Breakfast Club who were also signed with ZE Records (later acquired by MCA).
In July 1992, a remix of the song was released in Europe to support a Was (Not Was) Greatest Hits album. It reached no. 4 on the UK charts, becoming the most successful single by the band. Madonna requested her original vocal not be used so the track features Kim Basinger as un-credited (but widely publicised) lead vocalist, along with Ozzy Osbourne (also uncredited). However, the '90s remix version with Madonna's vocals leaked onto the internet in April 2008.
In the UK, the album was released on vinyl and cassette, however only the vinyl had sufficient room to list all the credits, including that of Madonna who is amusingly listed under "People who we'd give busfare to - even it it were out last quarter". Unfortunately, with no hit single to raise it's profile, the album failed to chart.
