Other In-Store Promotional Videos
All the videos that are included on this page are rare promotional videos distributed only to record shops. They are either in the form of compilations used to promote a number of artists on that particular record label, which often come in a custom sleeves, or a single video issued in a plain cardboard slip-case with a spine label that includes the company logo. A summary of the videos included here is given below followed by a photo gallary.

1985 - cbs..epic..portrait VIDEO SAMPLER
The first promotional compilation to include a Madonna video, namely 'Gambler'. Or rather 'the gambler' as it is listed here. It contains 15 tracks in total and the video comes with stickers on both the spine and front of the cassette.
1987 - WEA: April '87 Video Compilation
Promotional in-store compilation which contains videos from twenty-one artists, including one from Madonna, the new video for 'La Isla Bonita'. It also includes the original information sheet.
1987 - WEA: Madonna - 'The Look of Love'
'The Look of Love' may be the first WEA promotional video issued exclusively for an individual Madonna single and would explain it's eye-watering winning bid of £75 when it was recently offered for sale on eBay.
1989 - WEA: Madonna - 'Like A Prayer' / Pepsi TV Advert
The 'Like A Prayer' promo video is unique in that it also contains the now-infamous TV commercial for the aborted Pepsi campaign. The resulting controversy from the music video resulted in Pepsi ending their relationship with Madonna and subsequently the advert was never repeated. Accordingly, this promotional video, issued to selected record stores before the controversy, is the only official release containing the withdrawn advert. However, collectors should note that there are two versions:
1989 - WEA: Madonna - Express Yourself
This video comes with the 'US Division' spine label but is a UK promo. See also 'Cherish' promo video.
1989 - WEA: June '89 In-Store Video
Promotional in-store compilation which contains various videos from twenty-three artists, including two from Madonna, the new video 'Express Yourself' and 'Like A Prayer'. It also includes a rarely seen Madonna TV advert for 'Like A Prayer'.
1989 - WEA: Madonna - Cherish
This is the second video to follow the 'US Division' format.
1989 - Twelve Titles To Fall For
This appears to be the first compilation promo video issued by WEA that comes in its own custom sleeve and SAM 584 catalogue number. The title and packaging is a play on the autumn season, such humour would be a running theme with future compilation videos. 'Twelve Titles' appears to refer to LPs hence Madonna "Like A Prayer" appearing as one of the 'titles' with the two promo videos ('Like A Prayer' and 'Cherish') listed underneath.
1990 - WEA: Madonna Instore Compilation Video
An exclusively Madonna-only promotional video, containing eleven videos (see photo) it was probably issued as an additional marketing push for the 'Immaculate Collection' set of releases. As it contains 'Justify My Love' it would have been issued after the 'Immaculate Collection' video compilation. While following a similar line up of videos, it also includes 'Into The Groove' which was not included in the commercial release (probably because it is not a 'proper' video) but has omitted 'Open Your Heart', 'Cherish' and 'Oh Father'.
1990 - WEA: Madonna "Vogue"
"Vogue" was one of Madonna's 'event' singles so it is not surprising that it was heavily promoted. It has the honour of being the only video to be promoted on two separate video cassettes, the former exclusively and the second along with "Don't Want To Fall In Love" from Jane Child. It is likely that the popularity of Madonna's video was being used as a marketing tool to raise the awareness of the Canadian singer as this, her debut single, was released in May, a month after 'Vogue'. Incidentally, the track reached no 22 in the UK charts but there were to be no further releases from Jane Child, at least not in the UK.

1990 - Twelve Plays for Christmas
Continuing the title puns, 'Twelve Plays For Christmas' is the second custom made promotional compilation video issued by WEA which contains, funnily enough, twelve titles to play. The videos are intended to promote their corresponding albums as Christmas presents and top of the list is the biggest selling album of the year, Madonna's 'Immaculate Collection'. 'Vogue' is selected as the promotional video. This video is unique in that it is the only one to feature a centre sticker on the cassette. There is also a blank generic WEA sticker on the spine which, on close inspection, can be seen to be covering an 'EastWest' spine sticker with a logo and some obscured text including 'Christmas Compilation ... 625 Lines' underneath.
1991 - Ten Titles To Fall For
Following the earlier promo video 'Twelve Titles To Fall For' in 1989, the autumn offering for 1991 contains the same pun. Strangely, there are actually twelve artists featured on the video, not ten. In addition, there are no fewer than three videos from Madonna albeit a mini 'best of' offerings from previous years namely 'Like A Prayer' (1989), 'Justify My Love' (1990) and yet another outing for 'Vogue' (1990) which by now had appeared on no fewer than five different promotional videos.
1991 was a disappointing year for Madonna videos as two of the three singles released that year were reissues from The Immaculate Collection that had not merited new videos ('Crazy For You' and 'Holiday'). While there had been a new single in 1991 i.e. 'Rescue Me' it came with a video that merely consisted of a compilation of footage from the 1987 'Who's That Girl' world tour. Not even the most recent 'Blond Ambition' tour from the previous year! Using four-year old footage that bore no relation to the track was an appallingly stale, slapdash effort so it was not surprising that it was not included in this compilation.

This Used To be My Playground
This is one of the rarer single-track promo videos issued to promote the single. It is also the first, featured here, to use the new label format which includes contact details of the marketing department.
Erotica (version 1)
The video for Erotica was hugely controversial - see the single entry for more details. Consequently the video was edited for promotional use to prevent a blanket ban. This is Version 1, the most edited version as used in the US and UK. There is also a Version 2 which is slightly longer and was issued in Europe. However, the full version remained unavailable except as a highly limited French release until footage of the 'Making of Sex' appeared on the internet. Subsequently the full version was eventually released on the 'Making Of' DVD released in 2007 which is featured on its own page on this website albeit that it was not issued within this 'decade'. However, it has been included as it remains the only format on which the full 1992 video of Erotica has been made available.
