Erotica
Promotional Items
For the full narrative of 'Erotica' please refer to the entry under the SINGLES tab
Compared to the withdrawn picture disc all other items somewhat pale in comparison. However, there are some rare promotional items. Not that the 7" single in stickered sleeve is one of them.
There are, however, two different 12" white labels. The first has a SAM label (SAM 1103) containing album and instrumental versions which is quite easy to find. Interestingly, it appears to be the only 12" white label promo that was issued in a picture sleeve albeit that this is just the standard 12" sleeve. It does however come with a rectangular promotional sticker on the rear - the same sort of generic sticker that was slapped onto album sleeves.
The second 12" (plain) white label is very interesting as it contains exclusive William Orbit remixes which are not available on any of the standard commercial releases. This is the first time a promotional white label was issued in the UK which contains such exclusive material and not surprisingly this adds considerably to its rarity. Very few of these white labels were pressed as they were only issued to selected club DJs rather than commercial radio stations. This was perhaps to tie in with the underground, somewhat elusive vibe of the S&M night club scene. Consequently, although all the attention is understandably focused on the picture disc, 'Erotica' can also be said to have produced the rarest UK white label promotional pressing.
Rounding off the music-based promotional items there are also two in-store promo CDs, numbered 36 and 37 respectively.
Paper-based items saw a return to form with a strange counterstand display for the 7" single that required the image of Madonna to be shown upside down (as it was designed to hold a single sleeve which opens at the top) although perhaps this was intentional. There is also a display flat for the single and a display flat for the withdrawn picture disc. Although it can sell for up to £50, this particular display flat is quite numerous. It has no doubt acquired additional collectability because of its association with the withdrawn picture disc and unfortunately, as already mentioned in the standard section, some unscrupulous sellers also try to match it with a bootleg picture disc. Given it's availability in relatively large numbers, this would rather contradict the conspiracy theory that the picture disc was never intended for a widespread release given that large numbers of these flats were distributed.
Finally, and not surprisingly with yet another controversial video, the video was used as a promotional tool. 'Version 1', containing a heavily edited version of the video was distributed along with a lesser distributed 'Version 2' which contains a longer version. Of most interest is a so-called 'promotional video' that appeared in 1997 called 'Sex - The Making Of' which apparently contains the full version.
