DMC (Disco Mix Club) - DJ-only Promo LPs
Disco Mix Club (DMC) is a DJ remix service founded by Tony Prince which began as a radio show (Disco Mix Club Show) in 1981 on Radio Luxembourg in the UK. Prince helped popularise a new style of DJ mixes using the turntable as an instrument. DMC started operating as a remix service in 1983 producing exclusive remixes on cassettes. The vinyl format followed in July 1984 with CDs in 1989.
DMC discs come in different formats depending on whether they are ‘Previews’, ‘Mixes’ or ‘International’. The ‘Previews’ are of least interest as they contained the standard release but were, at the time, normally issued prior to release to the public. Of more interest to the collector are the ‘Mixes 1’ and ‘Mixes 2’ and 'International' as these normally contain exclusive remixes (either of the single track or sequenced with others) only available on that particular DMC disc. Due to copyright restrictions, the DMC items featured here were never made available to the general public being issued only to DJ’s who subscribed to the service.
There are 29 DMC discs that include Madonna tracks as well as four additional 'Best Of' DMC LPs. Some of these discs are rarer than others. Of most interest for collectors are those that contain a standalone remix of Madonna tracks - Megadonna (Feb 1985), Madonna Megamix I (Feb 87), and Madonna Megamix II (Jul 1990). Having said that, the rarest individual disc is the October 1984 issue which contains her debut and has been offered for sale for anything up to £100. There are also three other particularly rare discs: September '85 (Into The Groove), December '86 (Papa Don't Preach), and February '87 (La Isla Bonita) and this is reflected in the valuations below. Valuations for these discs have been based on asking prices and availability from the Discogs site.
For the collector who is more interested in getting hold of the multitrack remixes, there is a series of The ‘Best Of’ LPs, four of which include Madonna and the tracks selected are the aforementioned rare mixes, namely Vol. 2 (Madonna Goes To The Doctor), Vol. 3 (Megadonna), Vol. 4 (Madonna Megamix) and Vol. 9 (Madonna Megamix II).
For ease of reference a table below shows each of the discs on which a Madonna track (or tracks) is included along with the approximate valuation. This is followed by a picture gallery of each of the discs.
