The Special Olympics - A Very Special Christmas
After a run of remixes and albums containing previously released material, December saw the release of an interesting charity compilation on behalf of the Special Olympics: ‘A very Special Christmas’.
Overseen by Jimmy Iovine for A&M Records, this was the first in a series of Christmas-themed compilation albums produced to benefit the Special Olympics and has since raised millions of dollars. As well as Madonna, the compilation also includes contributions from Whitney Houston, Sting, U2 and Bruce Springsteen among others and is housed in a sleeve with cover artwork designed by artist and social activist Keith Haring.
Madonna’s contribution was a previously unreleased Madonna track – her cover of ‘Santa Baby’, a 1953 Christmas song written by Joan Javits and Philip Springer. The song is a tongue-in-cheek look at a Christmas list sung by a woman who wants extravagant gifts such as sables, yachts, and decorations from Tiffany's, which perhaps explains it ironic appeal to Madonna the world’s premier ‘Material Girl’. It was mooted for a Christmas single release and even though that never materialised it still remains Madonna's best-selling non-single track to date, selling 189,000 digital downloads according to Nielsen SoundScan
